The Register Buildings in Sunderland, a Grade II listed property, required a careful balance of heritage preservation and modern safety upgrades.
Endeavour Group partnered with BDN Architects who were acting on behalf of Sunderland City Council to revitalise this historically significant structure while ensuring compliance with current safety standards. As part of Sunderland’s urban transformation, the project addressed and overcame challenges to ensure that adequate means of escape and sufficient fire-resistant compartmentation was included within the design.
Detailed design reviews included protected stair cores and automatic detection systems to enhance safety. Materials were carefully chosen to resist external fire spread while preserving the building’s architectural character. Plans to upgrade the façade further blended heritage elements with modern functionality, creating a safe and flexible space for future commercial tenants.
The Register Buildings project will stand as a testament to Endeavour Group’s ability to integrate safety and innovation while honouring architectural history.
